The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) claims that throughout the 17 months of the interim administration (from September 2024 to January 2026), the country's human rights status was concerning.

According to the rights organization, a number of human rights breaches occurred during this time, including border killings, political violence, mob violence, attacks on journalists, interference with freedom of expression, and a decline in peace and order.

At a news conference today, Wednesday, at the National news Club's Abdus Salam Hall in Dhaka, HRSS Executive Director Ejazul Islam gave the information and unveiled a study titled "Post–July Uprising Human Rights Situation and Pre-Election Violence."

Human rights campaigner Noor Khan Liton stated during the press conference, "State troops failed to take adequate action since mob violence reached such a level." Mobs attacked a number of offices.

Some unseen entities were seen to be present at this period. The mass uprising's character, activism, and ideals became hazy as a result, he said.

According to the report, the interim administration that was established following the public revolt in 2024 made some attempts to guarantee judicial independence and enhance human rights, but these were insufficient. Public dissatisfaction and worries about social fairness, human dignity, and citizen security grew as a result of the inability to stop mob violence.

Election-related and political violence

HRSS data shows that in 1,411 instances of political violence over the previous 17 months, at least 195 persons were murdered and 11,219 were injured. Dominance battles, political retaliation, conflicts over rallies and elections, extortion, and unauthorized establishment occupation were among the primary causes. The BNP suffered more than any other political party. There were 7,131 injuries and 121 fatalities in 704 party-related events.

In the same time frame, 236 terrorist attacks resulted in 249 injuries and 156 fatalities. Over a hundred political offices, over 130 homes, businesses, and automobiles were damaged or set on fire, and over 300 individuals were shot.

Between October and December, 155 violent incidents related to the 13th legislative election resulted in seven fatalities and 1,403 injuries. Shahid Sharif Osman bin Hadi, a spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho, was shot in Paltan and died while seeking treatment in Singapore. Nomination disagreements have led to fatal incidents in Chattogram, Mymensingh, and other places.

Attacks on journalists and acts of mob violence

According to the report, there were 413 instances of mob violence and lynching in 17 months, resulting in 259 fatalities and 313 injuries. Six journalists were killed and 834 were assaulted or harassed in 427 attacks against media. 222 journalists were charged in 49 cases throughout this period. Arson and vandalism also happened at Prothom Alo's and The Daily Star's offices.

33 people were arrested and 69 people were accused in 41 instances under the Cyber Security Act and the Cyber Protection Ordinance. Given that the majority of instances involved social media information, HRSS voiced worry about potential legal abuse.

Persecution of minorities and extrajudicial executions

Sixty people died in 17 months as a result of torture, fighting with government enforcement, or being detained. Of the 127 detainees who perished in jails, 44 were convicted and 83 were awaiting trial. The families of a number of people, including Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, the previous minister of industry, claimed that the deaths were premeditated.

56 attacks targeted members of minority populations, resulting in one fatality and 27 injuries. 65 homes, 63 idols, and 17 temples were vandalized or attacked at this time.
